Kitsch is a term that’s been around for quite some time. It can be described as art or items that are considered to be in poor taste, corny, or overly sentimental. For many people, kitsch has become an insult with negative connotations, and they avoid it at all costs. But there are some who enjoy the warmth and nostalgia of kitschy things from their childhoods. These vintage collectors know what they’re looking for when browsing through flea markets and antique malls. Life is a journey, enjoy the ride in a 1956 Nash Metropolitan

I am so excited to share with you all the newest addition to our mid-century modern family, our 1956 Nash Metropolitan!! My hubby Gary and I are over the moon excited with this adorable micro car that couldn’t be more perfect for two people (and their cute puppy dog). The fabulous turquoise blue color of Berkshire green just screams let the good times roll

The story behind our Nash Metropolitan is quite endearing and it puts a smile on my face when I think about it. Our Metro came from Oregon where it was put on a truck and driven down to a well-known Nash Metropolitan restorer in southern California. It belonged to a husband and wife who were Nash Metropolitan enthusiasts and their grown children were selling it as it had sat out in the fields for years since their folks had grown older. Fun fact is that the Nash Metropolitan is also known as the “clown car” because it looks so zany and small and their parents had actually attended the local clown college and drove around in their Metro’s dressed as clowns. Isn’t that wild!! It must have been a real hoot to see them!! The mom even had a convertible Nash Metropolitan for years and her husband purchased the hardtop for her but she never really drove it because she enjoyed the convertible so much.

Say Cheese! Vintage Valentine Cards

Where is the time going? It was just Christmas, then New Years, and now it will be Valentines Day. How sweet are these vintage Valentines? These are all camera / photography themed. A while back I did a post about all the cute vintage anthropomorphic Valentine cards and this year I came across these adorable cards of little cuties taking pictures. March will be here soon too and I am super excited as I will be heading up to Portland, Oregon for the Christine Palmer antiques and collectibles show where there will be 1,000 booths. I usually attend this show in July for the summer show and once in October for the Christmas show but this will be my first Spring show and I am really looking forward to it. I usually go to the show with my twin sister and we have the best time. I can’t wait to see what treasures we find. As has become my ‘norm’ I will be live tweeting and doing Vine video posts and fingers crossed the internet connection is better than it was at the summer show so please stay tuned, lots of great footage to come.

Pinup, Pyrex and More at the Antique Mall

Yasmina Greco - Pigtails and Pirates Dress- Whistlestop Antiques

Yasmina Greco – Pigtails and Pirates Dress- Whistlestop Antiques

Such a lovely weekend out antiquing with my hubby. The weather in Northern California has changed from being very hot to mid 70s with cool evenings…. almost Fall like. I don’t know how long that will last before we get another scorcher but it is fantastic and perfect for a weekend of antiquing. We stopped at a couple antique malls; one in Santa Rosa ‘Whistlestop’ that has a big train painted on the brick building and the other in Sebastopol ‘Antique Society’. Both are multi dealer malls so there is always lots to see to pick through.

Vintage Pyrex

                                                Vintage Pyrex and Kitchenware

Here are a couple pics of the goodies inside the malls and you can see the one in Sebastopol had a lot of vintage Pyrex and I was thrilled because I had been searching for quite sometime now for the turquoise snowflake square baking dishes. I am not a expert when it comes to Pyrex and don’t know if items should have lids or not or what the difference between ‘space savers’ or ‘baking dishes’ are but, I am collecting the turquoise snowflake (yes, because it is turquoise and you all know it is my favorite color) and now I have another couple pieces to add to my set. For the record, these two oblong square shaped pieces did not have lids.

Both antique malls have a bit of retro and Mid-Century Modern and even lots of ephemera, glass, kitchenalia, vintage rhinestone jewelry, and even outdoor furniture and salvage so there really is a good mix of everything and something for everyone. Whistlestop even had their fabulous classic 1951 GMC truck out front and the lady working the register told us it had been in her family for many many years; that truck was immaculate and great for a pose.

Next week is a antique fair in the neighboring town of Healdsburg and it is beautiful drive up with all the vineyards in full glory this time of year. Some of you have asked about our 1956 Nash Metropolitan so I wanted to update you and tell you that it has been getting some love in the shop and we should have it back very soon so you can count on more pics to come!!

Visiting Antiques on Second in Napa, Califorinia

Antiques on Second Napa CA

What to do in Napa, CA? Okay, so if wine tasting and visiting wineries isn’t your thing, head to downtown Napa where amongst other things you will find Antiques on Second. This is such a fun place to hunt and shop and you will no doubt be surprised by the shop setup and the many goodies inside. Antiques on Second is a multi-dealer Antique shop and although has under 50 booths it has a great selection of vintage clothing, vintage accessories, lots of vintage linens, Asian items, jewelry, furniture, figurines, collectibles, salt and pepper shakers, paintings, garden related items and so much more! We spent over an hour in this shop and the staff was really friendly and knowledgeable, the shop is clean and really well setup, booths are merchandised really nicely too. I chatted with one of the staff and Antiques on Second and this shop is the last remaining Antiques shop in downtown Napa.  So, for those of you that love California wine country especially the Napa Valley….. you can certainly enjoy the large selection of antiques and collectibles downtown Napa has by visiting Antiques on Second. Prices are very fair too!! We sure had a lot of fun.
