Pinup girls and Poodles are quintessential of the 1950s so I wanted to do a post for you all about the origins of the Poodle skirt and showcase one of my all time favorite Poodle skirts made by a brand you might not be familiar with – Dangerfield Clothing.

Rockabilly gals, Pinup dolls, and retro/vintage fashion enthusiasts can thank Juli Lynne Charlot for the Poodle skirt. Per Wikipedia –  Juli Lynne was a young woman who wanted to be in fashion but she had no money for the new styles. In 1947, at the age of 25, Charlot was invited to a holiday party in Los Angeles and wanted to create a dress especially for the event. Not having money at the time Charlot decided to make her own skirt for the Christmas party. Charlot stated in an United Press International article of February 25, 1953 that, “If I had known how to sew, or had the money to purchase better materials, I would have never made the circle skirt.”

Today, when we think of 1950s clothing, the image that most often pops into our mind is the poodle skirt. Most vintage collectors know Charlot as the designer of some of the very best and most clever circle skirts to come out of the 1950s. It was quite fashionable at the time for women to be accompanied by dogs on leashes so Charlot decided to make a dog-themed skirt. And thus the iconic poodle skirt was born. Charlot’s creations were more than clothing – they told a story – and became conversation starters. Read more about Charlot and her company on Wikipedia

In these pictures taken by my hubby Gary I am wearing my favorite Poodle skirt by Australian brand Dangerfield Clothing

The skirt is incredibly well constructed with a built-in petticoat hem and the white Poodles are adorable with red flowers and bows and they really pop against the fabric making them standout beautifully. This is such a great novelty print skirt!! I am wearing my Heart of Haute Lily top in red and added my vintage Poodle purse and red heels. This outfit is perfect for the Autumn and winter and not too heavy as all the fabrics breathe. Even my my fluff ball Bichon Frise puppy dog Luna decided to join in for some pictures!!

Review: Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print – The Full-Busted Pinup Girl’s Best Friend

Yasmina Greco - Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print

Bright, happy, elegant, effortless, and colorful are all words I think of when I where this dress the Pinup Couture Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print and I am so happy I snapped it up when it was restocked at Pinup Girl Clothing. The print is amazing, one of the best novelty prints I have ever seen. Reminds me of 1950s Florida and I love that the oranges range in colors of yellow to bright orange and go from small to bigger on the hanging branches.

In these pictures that my wonderful hubby who does amazing things with vintage cameras over at Upcycled Classics snapped of me, I have my Pinup Couture Wicker Baguette Purse in lime green and added a simple yellow cardigan. I felt glamorous and chic, like I was on the Riviera. We snapped some pics on the front porch with fluffy puppy Luna then headed to a lovely outdoor antique and collectible show. I was comfortable and relaxed and received so many compliments.

The Jenny dress is one of my wardrobe staples and I don’t have nearly enough!! When you are a full-busted gal like myself it is very hard to find dresses that fit, have style, and have such great novelty prints and that is why the Jenny is a staple for me. I always feel put together and effortless. The dress is styled after the 1960s sundresses. The first thing you notice when you step into the dress is that the bodice is lined, boned, and fused. The lovely orange colored straps are adjustable so you can show as much or as little of your curves as you are comfortable with. Because of the adjustable straps and boning, the dress has incredible structure and will flatter a range of bust sizes, even those of us blessed with full-bust lines can comfortably wear this gorgeous dress and feel very put together and chic. The skirt on the Pinup Couture Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print is much like the Jenny skirts, a very full circle skirt and the material is a luxurious sateen that holds pleats and shape incredibly and this version even has pockets!! Zips nicely up the back and nips in your waist. Also, this one comes with a matching orange belt and that adds just the right amount of flair. Be prepared for lots of compliments!!

I am wearing the Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print in a 2XL (all my Jenny dresses are 2XL) and this size accommodates my full bust, yes, it is very roomy in the waist as I take XL in Jenny skirts but I love having the option of adding a belt to take in some of the excess fabric if I prefer, depending on how much waist definition I want that day.

This one does not disappoint!! It is amongst my very favorite Jenny skirts from Pinup Girl. The print and colors are what this stunner is all about. This Jenny fits me spot on and I am wearing an XL, I did notice that the fabric does give a little in the waist making it just that much more comfy. I absolutely love the gathered waist and full hemline in this 1950s circle skirt.  The Mary Blair magic is certainly there with the stripes that are so sweet and those charming Elephants and balloons in perfect big-top flair!! Colors of vibrant pinks, blues and yellows are what initially called out to me and I knew I had to have this skirt on my body right away. I paired it with my Steady Clothing Sophia top which is fits my curves perfectly!! I also added a pretty pink petticoat and Pinup Girl Clothing shows. Even my puppy dog Luna loved it… well maybe not as much as me!!

Review: Bernie Dexter Chelsea Red Dog Bombshell Dress

Yasmina Greco - Bernie Dexter Chelsea Red Dog Pinup Dress

In a recent post I wrote about my visit to the Bernie Dexter pinup rockabilly store while on a trip to Oregon and shared how I’ve never had good luck fitting into Bernie Dexter styles. My very first photo-shoot was in a Paris style and it was tricky getting my breasts into it so, I didn’t think Bernie Dexter dresses were made for serious curves and large breasts. I was always a bit saddened because the prints are stunning and so many gals gush over their Bernie Dexter dresses but, they didn’t work on my body…until today when the awesome and helpful lady working at the Bernie Dexter store handed me a rare gem to try on in a magical style called Chelsea!!!

I had come into the shop wearing a vintage style dress with poodles on it so the print of this Chelsea was perfect; it was the Red Dog dress with many dog breeds as the print. The lady at the shop told me the dress came from their London location recently. I slipped the Chelsea on and my-oh-my was I pleasantly surprised. The fit was the very first thing I noticed…. especially the part that my well-endowed bosom fit into the dress. Next, I noticed that this dress reminded me almost immediately of the Jenny dress from Pinup Girl Clothing of which I own several. The Chelsea dress is made of a very light weight cotton fabric and I found the very lightness of it to be fun and flirty and with the addition of a petticoat perfect, the dress does not loose shape or structure. The fabric lightness is ideal for summer. Next I noticed the dress has an attached tie-belt, which is fabulous for nipping in the waist. I am wearing the Chelsea in a size 2XL and although quite roomy in the waist, the belt takes care of it. The dress was incredibly comfortable and I did not feel like my breasts were squished at all. I could easily spend an entire day in this dress. I felt like a bombshell!! My only wish would be the addition of adjustable straps and then you could decide how much or how little breast would show.

Bichon Frise Brooch

Bichon Frise Brooch

Here are some pics of me with my puppy dog Luna, how fitting right, since the dress pattern is all about dogs, yay!!  I styled the dress simply with only a petticoat, cropped black cardigan, red shoes and my sparkly rhinestone Bichon Frise puppy dog brooch because my Luna is a Bichon Frise. For a day to evening look I would add a lovely vintage purse with Poodles on the front. Adding a lovely vintage mustard yellow cardigan and pair of shoes would look fabulous as well.  I look forward to adding many more figure flattering Bernie Dexter Chelsea’s to my wardrobe and I am confident I will be Pinup perfect!!

Pinup Girl Poses: Tips & Tricks for Perfect Pinup Posing

Yasmina Greco Pinup Girl Poses

I’ve been hearing from so many of you asking for some tips on Pinup posing so, I put together what I think are 5 tips that probably all of you can do really well with just a little practice. There are some poses and some tips for looking your best in photos. I’d love to see some of your Pinup pics where you are incorporating my tips!!

Legs Up and Laying on Back
Classic Pinup pose. You might want to get yourself ready by practicing because it can take a little work on your part to hold those legs up. This pose is terrific because if you are a little shy, you don’t have to show too much and the pose can be done very classically and elegantly as you can do it wearing a dress or skirt, it doesn’t have to be all lingerie. You simply lay on your back, place your arms either over your head or, use a prop like a telephone and it can be a nice way to show a hint of cleave while keeping it classy, and lift those legs, keep one a little lower and press them together.

Looking Over the Shoulder
Great classic pose here. You can show off your beautiful outfit while you stand with your back to the camera and slightly turn your head to look over your shoulder. This can be a great pose to show off beautiful legs or derrière. Wear a pretty of shoes and the higher the heel the better.

Props
I love working with props. Props are great because they give your hands something to do and this is great especially if you are new to Pinup posing and are having a hard time ‘relaxing’ those fingers in photoshoots. Props also add another element to your pics and I think can make a shot really feel real because your are active and doing something. Props can be as simple as holding a purse or vintage camera.

Smile
Pinup is all about over-the-top facial expressions. Big wide eyes, and lots of smiling. You have to smile with your eyes!! A great tip is holding your tongue pressed against the roof of your mouth as it helps with a double chin and slims the face. Practice saying the vowels of the alphabet and really exaggerate them….. one great tip when doing Pinup is, if the pose you are in is not uncomfortable or you don’t feel a little weird then you are not doing right. So, practice smiling, you want a big inviting smile, make sure your eyes are smiling too!!

Point those Toes
This one is a little difficult but, boy, does it make a difference in pictures. Pointing your toes when you are sitting or have a leg out for a picture looks incredible in the final photo. I suggest looking at pictures of Pinup models and paying very close attention to how their feet look and you will notice they are pointing their toes and it makes a lovely shape to the leg and foot. It is not easy to point your toes in certain shoes but you really must try to and you will love the end result.
