Sizzling Summer Style: Mid-Century & Atomic That Turns Heads

This summer has been full of firsts, fun, and fabulous mid-century atomic vignettes! Gary and I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with two incredible antique shops right here in Sonoma County—Antique Harvest in Healdsburg and Antique Society in Sebastopol—to bring a little of our mid-century magic to their spaces. From window styling to themed showroom vignettes, we’ve been diving headfirst into the world of visual merchandising, and the response has been absolutely heartwarming!

A Retro Road Trip Window at Antique Harvest, Healdsburg

Let’s start in Healdsburg, where we had the absolute privilege of collaborating with the incredible Carol Eagle, who owns Antique Harvest along with her husband Phil. Carol is truly the heart and soul of the shop—and one of the kindest, most generous people you’ll ever meet. Her deep knowledge of antiques, estate jewelry, and mid-century treasures is only matched by her sharp wit and warm, joyful spirit.

Carol brings so much care and humor into everything she does, and she’s the kind of shop owner who goes above and beyond to support her dealers—always cheering them on, sharing insights, and creating a welcoming space where everyone thrives.

Designing the Mid-Century Summer Vacation window display with Carol was an absolute highlight for Gary and I. She’s a true vintage visionary and even contributed some fabulous pieces of her own, including atomic barware, classic 1950s books, and original records that added nostalgic depth and character to the scene. It was a beautiful collaboration that transformed the front of the shop into a vibrant, living postcard from the past.

Gary and I rummaged through our storage units to find just the right pieces to bring the vintage road trip theme to life:

  • Our cherry red Formica dinette set (yes, we’re obsessed!)
  • Stacks of vintage suitcases ready for adventure
  • Classic cameras to capture travel memories
  • Pinup-style polka dot dresses and circle skirts
  • Teak lamps with atomic fiberglass shades
  • Pink Pyrex Gooseberry & Amish Butterprint Cinderella stacking bowls
  • Atomic bar carts and barware and so much more!

The joy has been in the reactions. Because it’s the front window of the shop, we’ve had the unique pleasure of seeing people stop, smile, point, and even tear up as they reminisce.

We’ve heard so many sweet stories from visitors about growing up with these exact pieces in their homes—or at grandma’s! And for younger generations, it’s been all about the color, style, and “wow factor” of this atomic-era wonderland.

Over in Sebastopol, we brought the heat (and plenty of chrome) with our Atomic Summer pop-up at Antique Society! We were delighted to be working closely with the shop’s inspiring owner, Angela Vidinsky. Collaborating with Angela on this theme was an absolute joy—she’s not only incredibly talented when it comes to color coordination, display, and visual storytelling, but she also brings a thoughtful, values-driven perspective to everything she does.

Saturday Antiquing at Whistle Stop Antiques

Carlo of Hollywood Black Stallion Horses

It has been raining for a while now here in Northern California. Lots of flooding and people badly effected. This is not the norm. We are usually in a perpetual drought. Thank goodness my family is just fine. One positive is that they vineyards are already starting to bloom and this time next month they will be stunning.

Being a rainy soggy Saturday, we went to Whistle Stop Antiques mall in Santa Rosa down by Railroad Square to take a look around and search for some treasures. It is really hit or miss like it is at most antique malls. We have been really lucky a few times and found some really great treasures like our vintage Philco Predicta TV, some fabulous Sputnik lighting and Mid-Century Modern chairs and cabinets. Whistlestop is a multi-dealer mall and even has a 2nd floor upstairs. You will find a nice assortment of vintage, retro, mid-century, kitchenalia, Pyrex, artwork, jewelry, and lots of ephemera and even a lot of vintage trains, toys, and Pez collectibles….. something no doubt for everyone.

Here’s a couple pics we snapped. A lovely vintage carousel horse, an incredible Carlo of Hollywood black stallion painting in the amazing forced perspective frame, glass displays, and even a super neat vintage 1950s chrome dining set upholstered with new retro grey fabric. I would love to take this one home but…… where to put it? It was a fun visit at Whistle Stop today!!

Midcentury Modern Madness

With the long holiday weekend, we drove over to Sacramento to go to one of our all time favorite antique malls ‘Midway Antique Mall’. It’s almost like a day-trip to Disneyland for us. If you want to experience stepping back in time to the ‘good old days’ then this place will not disappoint. The mall has that total ‘Midcentury Modern – Eames Era’ vibe with specific ‘rooms’ setup as if you were in someone’s house from the 1950s-1960s. On this visit we found a neat Tiki Room with bar and barckcloth and lots of tiki mugs. Vintage kitchens, lots of those fantastic Formica kitchen-dining sets, and of course living rooms, offices, and more.

We ended up with some awesome finds – a vintage turquoise blue canister set in that awesome lustroware material that is in remarkable condition and the owner shared with us that if we wanted to actually use these in our kitchen (he and his wife use everything they acquire) we could, and to do so he advised putting our coffe/tea in plastic bags into the canisters and that way they would not get stained. We also found some vintage fish wall plaques by Lefton and Ceramicraft, and these neat “stretch” kitty cat salt and pepper shakers. I am still searching for either a turquoise Formica dining set, a hot pink Formica dining set or a turquoise/pink combo colored Formica dining set.

Hope you are all having a nice long weekend filled with lots of good antiquing and junking!!
