This will Shock you! Collecting Starbucks City Coffee Mugs for a Major Jolt

The hot collectible these days are the Starbucks City Coffee Mugs. The first City collection was introduced in 1995 and was the ‘Icon Series’ followed by the ‘Collage Series’ and then the ‘Skyline Series’. Now there is the jumbo-sized ‘City Mugs Series’.

My research as of the writing of this article discovered a auction back in 2010 where a rare 1994 Starbucks City Mug Minneapolis St. Paul, sold for $1,500. It is also rumored that one sold prior for $2,000. In 2004 a woman paid upwards of $1,000 for one of the Starbucks City mugs. In 2009 eBay auction a 1994 New Orleans 20 oz. mug that displayed a Bourbon Street sign sold for over $528.00 and in another auction another mug of the same city sold for over $800! As of the writing of this article, there is a 1994 New Orleans Starbucks City Mug on eBay for $645.00.

The first version of the Starbucks Coffee Istanbul mug is pretty rare and hard to find and is really neat as it has a depiction of the Evil Eye on the mug and the Evil Eye is a common symbol amongst the countries in the Middle East and Mediterranean. There is an Istanbul mug on eBay right now for $499.00! Starbucks Barcelona 1994 Series Prototype City Mug on eBay for $499.00. This particular Barcelona mug is rare and collectible because it was a prototype at only 14oz. rather than the typical 16oz. and the bottom of this mug is blank.

Another collectible mug right now is the Starbucks City Mug – Lisboa/Lisbon Portugal and on eBay it is currently $499 and has bids, wonder how high it will go!

If you have been collecting the Starbucks City Mugs your collection at auction can net you some amazingly high dollars! Right now on eBay there is a listing for ‘48 Starbucks Skyline Series City Mugs Made in 2000’ and the current price is $10,000 and includes all these mugs: Alaska, Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Calgary w/ inscription, Canada, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Headquarters, Honolulu, Houston, Indianapolis, Lake Tahoe, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, Montreal, Napa Valley, New Orleans, New York w/ large logo, Niagara Falls, Palm Springs, Philadelphia, Phoenix, Pike Place Market w/ inscription, Pittsburgh, Portland, Raleigh, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, San Francisco w/ large logo, Seattle w/ sea plane, St. Louis, St. Paul, Tampa, Toronto w/ & w/out inscription, Vancouver w/ inscription, Victoria w/ inscription, Washington D.C.

In short, your Starbucks mugs can worth a lot of money so don’t throw them out or get rid of them. Do a little research to determine the value and keep them safe from damage and stains. You could be collecting your way to Big Bucks!!

Vintage Kitchen and Nostalgic Noel

We are in harvest season here in wine country. The vineyards are so busy with harvesters and the leaves are starting to turn. All the apple orchards have their charming country stands all setup and the tourists from San Francisco are making their final trips up to wine country for the season. The days are starting to cool with highs in the 70s and evening is a great time for fresh sea breezes to blow in. Another gorgeous day and I headed out for some antique picking. No sales in my area though I have my eye on an upcoming sale in the next couple weeks as church not too far from us has been advertising a huge rummage sale so I will certainly have to stop at that.

Found some amazing vintage yellow tin kitchen canisters, a really darling set of vintage 1950s Christmas NOEL bells, an aqua pottery poodle (I have not seen one like this before), an miniature Staffordshire dog marked ‘England’ and a beautiful Italian micro mosaic picture frame with brilliant blue and daisy flowers. The Italian micro mosaic frame is my favorite…..might not be able to part with it.

Collecting Vintage Bathing Beauty Figurines 1800s-1930s

My latest collecting craze is with these delicate and intriguing vintage bathing beauty figurines. The figures can date back to Victorian times though they were rather prominent collectibles in the 1920s and many were made in Germany from the late 1800s to the deco era into the 1930s and then many were ‘Made in Japan’ during WW1. Bathing beauties can be found wearing wigs, swimsuits, shoes, delicate clothing, no clothing – nude, as mermaids, and even holding parasols.  Prices are moderate at the moment and can range up to thousands of dollars depending on size, manufacturer, and country of origin with German made beauties commanding highest prices right now.  Here are a couple photos of Bathing Beauties from my recent trip to the Midway Antique Mall in Sacramento.

Here is a great resource with many photos on Bathing Beauties: Bawdy Bisques and Naughty Novelties

Midway Antique Mall – Eames Era Galore

Over the holiday weekend we decided to take a drive out to Sacramento, CA. When I researched Sacramento I found ‘Midway Antique Mall’ which is a multi-dealer mall and specializes in Eames Era and 1950s merchandise and collectibles. Also, there is ‘57th Street Antiques Row’ which is multiple shops and malls on 57th Street in Sacramento. So, there was sure to be plenty of looking and shopping to keep us busy.

The drive was over 2 hours and traffic was heavy. When we approached Sacramento the sky had a brown tint and the smell of smoke was thick….there was a fire burning somewhere and by the looks of the sky and the smell, it was a big fire. It was a hot day too, by the time we arrived it was over 95 degrees!

We pulled up into the parking of Midway Antique Mall and there were lots of cars. We walked through the front door and were transported directly to 1960! OUTSTANDING! The first 4,000 sqft or so of this mall is all 1950s and 1960s rooms ranging from multiple setup rooms of living and dining rooms, a dentist office, bedroom and kitchens. Check out these amazing pictures that my husband took.

This mall is clean and well lit. Lots and lots of glass cases and booths that have vintage cameras, kitchen items, paintings, clocks, books, stamps, Holt Howard items and pixieware, vintage clothing and dressing rooms to try on the items, and lots of 1950s and 1960s poodles along with lovely linens.

The staff at this mall is so friendly and knowledgeable and a dealer named Kevin helped us the entire 3 hours we were there. As we were up at the register, Mark, the owner was ringing us up and packing our items with great care and he was so nice and friendly and told us stories about his 2 Yorkie dogs and how photo shoots take place in his mall and lots of magazine and TV shows have photographed and filmed at the mall because of all the neat and fabulous rooms and items. It has been a very, very, long time since I was in an antique mall and had such a blast! Even if we hadn’t bought a few boxes of items to take back to town with us, the shear experience of walking around the mall and seeing all the 1950s and 1960s rooms that were setup was such a thrill!!  We will certainly be back!!

Repurposed Vintage Milk Glass Vanity Jars

I was in a little antique shop looking in the glass cases and saw a lovely collection of small, delicate, white glass jars with embellished lids. The jars were so dainty and pretty. When I got home I began to do a bit of research and this is what I learned-

  • Material: Milk Glass
  • Made: 1800s-1960s
  • Purpose: Cold Cream Jars – Creams for Woman “What will your face be like in One-in Five-In-10 Years Time?”
  • Manufacturers:  Hazel-Atlas, Woodbury, Avon
  • Prices: $10-$50+ depending on materials used to embellish lids

Today, these jars are collectible and usually are found with paper labels and tin screw-on lids. The jars are repurposed today and the lids are embellished with antique buttons, vintage jewelry, bone china flowers, porcelain flowers and even micro mosaics. So pretty!!
