Atomic Mid-Century Summer Style: A Retro Design Guide

This summer has been full of firsts, fun, and fabulous mid-century atomic vignettes! Specifically, Gary and I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with two incredible antique shops right here in Sonoma County. To start, we worked with Antique Harvest in Healdsburg. Then, we headed over to Antique Society in Sebastopol.

As a result of these window styling projects, we’ve been diving headfirst into visual merchandising. Furthermore, the response from the local community has been absolutely heartwarming

Let’s start in Healdsburg, where we had the absolute privilege of collaborating with the incredible Carol Eagle, who owns Antique Harvest along with her husband Phil. Carol is truly the heart and soul of the shop. In addition, she is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet. Notably, her deep knowledge of antiques is only matched by her sharp wit. Because Carol brings so much care into everything she does, she creates a welcoming space where everyone thrives. For example, she even contributed some of her own fabulous atomic barware to our window display.

Carol brings so much care and humor into everything she does, and she’s the kind of shop owner who goes above and beyond to support her dealers—always cheering them on, sharing insights, and creating a welcoming space where everyone thrives.

Designing the summer window with Carol was a total highlight. Gary and I loved every minute! She’s a true vintage visionary and even contributed some fabulous pieces of her own, including Holt Howard atomic barware, classic 1950s books, and original records that added nostalgic depth and character to the scene.

It was a beautiful collaboration that transformed the front of the shop into a vibrant, living postcard from the past.

Gary and I rummaged through our storage units to find the right pieces. First, we grabbed our cherry red Formica dinette set.

Next, we added stacks of vintage suitcases. Additionally, we included pink Pyrex and atomic barware. Finally, we tied it all together with teak lamps curating the Atomic Road Trip Look.

  • Our cherry red Formica dinette set (yes, we’re obsessed!)
  • Stacks of vintage suitcases ready for adventure
  • Classic cameras to capture travel memories
  • Pinup-style polka dot dresses and circle skirts
  • Teak lamps with atomic fiberglass shades
  • Pink Pyrex Gooseberry & Amish Butterprint Cinderella stacking bowls
  • Atomic bar carts and barware and so much more!

We love seeing your reactions! People stop at the front window to smile and point.

We’ve heard so many sweet stories from visitors about growing up with these exact pieces in their homes—or at grandma’s! And for younger generations, it’s been all about the color, style, and “wow factor” of this atomic-era wonderland.

Over in Sebastopol, we brought the heat (and plenty of chrome) with our Atomic Summer pop-up at Antique Society! We were delighted to be working closely with the shop’s inspiring owner, Angela Vidinsky. Working with Angela on this theme was an absolute joy—she’s not only incredibly talented when it comes to color coordination, display, and visual storytelling, but she also brings a thoughtful, values-driven perspective to everything she does.

Holt-Howard Kitchen Cubs Polar Bears: A Collector’s Guide

A wide banner featuring various vintage Holt-Howard Kitchen Cubs polar bear ceramics, including the "Butter Berg" and "Sugar Crock" on a deep blue background.
The complete whimsy of the 1958 Holt-Howard Kitchen Cubs collection on full display.

Discover the rare and whimsical world of Holt-Howard Kitchen Cubs Polar Bears—adorable 1950s collectibles that include salt and pepper shakers, butter dishes, pitchers, and more. Grab a hot cocoa, cuddle up in your coziest cardigan, and get ready to tumble down a frosty vintage rabbit hole! Today, I’m sharing one of the cutest, and rarest mid-century marvels ever to grace the kitchen scene, the elusive Holt-Howard Kitchen Cubs Polar Bear series.

Now if you’ve been collecting for a while, you already know Holt-Howard was the king of kitschy-cute, with starry-eyed Santas, Pixieware jars galore. But in 1958, Holt-Howard briefly tiptoed into Arctic territory, releasing a charming little line of polar bear-themed kitchen accessories that are now so rare, some collectors don’t even know they exist!

Let’s break the (thin) ice on these chilly cuties, and I’ll share the scoop on what they are, why they’re special, and what to look for if you’re lucky enough to spot one out in the vintage wild.

What Are the Kitchen Cubs?

The Kitchen Cubs were part of Holt-Howard’s last known animal-themed kitchen series, and rumor has it they were created to celebrate the buzz around Alaska becoming a U.S. state in 1959. Imagine: ceramic polar bears perched on icy icebergs, ready to serve up your sugar, butter, and salt with a wink and a scarf.

These frosty little treasures were as whimsical as they were functional—full of mid-century charm and clever design. But here’s the twist: the Kitchen Cubs Polar Bears were part of a limited test production, meaning many never made it beyond the prototype or salesman sample stage. I

t’s believed there are just 10 unique pieces in the series—or 14 if you count the pairs. The ones that did make it into the world? They’re about as rare as a sunny day at the North Pole—and twice as delightful to discover!
