Continuing our search for the best pizza in San Francisco we are trying Luisa’s Restaurant Wine Bar Since 1959 right in Little Italy today. This is an old-school small restaurant with photos of Sophia Loren decorating the walls, bottles of limoncello on shelves and counters, and so many homemade favorites on the menu (and being ordered by many people)  like pizza, spaghetti, gnocchi, meat balls, linguine, pollo piccata, cannelloni and so much more. We were here to try the gourmet Neapolitan thin crust pizza today as we continue the search for the best pizza in San Francisco but these pasta dishes being brought out from the kitchen looked seriously delicious so we might need to do a bonus blog post of one or two of them.

Pizzas here are gourmet Neapolitan and thin crust and baked in a pizza oven not wood-fired. We ordered the Quattro Stagione that has cheese, margherita, pepperoni, and meatballs. Quattro Stagioni in Italian means the four seasons and it translates to dividing a pizza into four sections and toppings can be any combo. We didn’t order a salad today but had Americano coffees instead as we waited….. We had been walking up and down the hills of San Francisco and were a little tired so the coffee was a nice pick me up and was made from freshly ground espresso beans.

Piccolo Forno Pizzeria San Francisco

Piccolo Forno Pizzeria San Francisco
Piccolo Forno Pizzeria San Francisco

Memorial Day weekend and that means trying new pizzerias in San Francisco for our Great Pizza Tour of San Francisco 2021. We were expecting San Fransisco to be jam packed with tourists for the long holiday weekend but it wasn’t too bad. Today we are trying Piccolo Forno Pizzeria in North Beach, San Francisco’s Little Italy neighborhood.

Piccolo Forno Pizzeria is an authentic Italian local neighborhood pizzeria. It has a casual vibe where tourists and families will feel comfortable. This pizzeria is actually a trattoria serving not only pizzas but a nice selection of pasta dishes, salads, and deserts too. They even have a gluten free selection. But Gary and I were here for the pizza (and a Cesar salad) so we ordered a specialty 12” Italian Pizza called Pizza col Salame which is pizza with marinara sauce, mozzarella cheese and pepperoni.

Another beautiful day in San Francisco and off we go to Little Italy in North Beach. There are so many Italian restaurants and pizzerias in North Beach and today we selected Acquolina San Francisco a corner Italian restaurant. It had a lot of outdoor seating and looked really inviting. Lots of tourists are making it back to San Francisco and there sure were lots of people out and enjoying some Italian cuisine and it is a wonderful site to see after a year of being in quarantine.

Fisherman’s Pizza San Francisco

Fisherman's Pizza
Fisherman’s Pizza

One of the most famous and touristy areas of San Francisco is Fisherman’s Wharf. Fisherman’s Wharf is famous for its restaurants, shops, bayside attractions and of course Alcatraz Island. It was only fitting that today we would be trying some touristy pizza right in the heart of San Francisco as we search for the best pizza in San Francisco.

Gary and I parked our car and the first place we spotted was Fisherman’s Pizzeria and that is where we headed. Fisherman’s Pizza is located one block from Fisherman’s Wharf right next to several hotels and all the tourist attractions the area is famous for. Fisherman’s Pizza seemed to have a nice amount of outdoor seating and we were deciding if we wanted to dine here as a friendly waitress came running right out so we wouldn’t leave, and let us know we could sit anywhere we liked and once we sat down she gave us menus. It was a very windy day so we sat next to some flowers in tall planters to box us in a little from the wind. The menu had a variety of options (pastas, sandwiches, salads) and some specialty pizzas with seafood (since the restaurant is located right next to the bay) and then you can order any kind of pizza you pretty much want and add from a list of toppings. We decided to go for a basic pepperoni pizza since we were not sure what to expect.

As we sat waiting for our pizza there were lots of tourists walking by so we were entertained by the people watching. We noticed the tables and chairs at Fisherman’s Pizza looked pretty brand new and were really nice. The chairs resembled classic Parisian bistro chairs and were really comfortable. We were pretty hungry and looking forward to our pizza.

Piraat Pizzeria and Rotisserie San Francisco

Piraat Pizzeria and Rotisserie
Piraat Pizzeria and Rotisserie

Today we are tasting Piraat Pizzeria and Rotisserie located in the heart of Nob Hill above Union Square in San Francisco. Piraat Pizza is a little pizzeria located on the corner of Sutter and Taylor Street and it has that quintessential neighborhood pizzeria feel with the green, white, and red awning resembling the Italian flag and you know you can always grab a hot fresh slice or order a full pizza and other dishes. Does Piraat have the best pizza in San Francisco?

Once inside, Gary and I couldn’t believe how cute the pizzeria was. There are so many fun and whimsical details decorating the pizzeria like the wood beam accents on the ceiling, lovely Italian style tile and pottery, and the wonderful figural details. It was very bright and clean too. This was the first time in one year since COVID-19 that we were actually dining inside (we were the only ones there but a few folks stopped in for slices to go) and there was one friendly professional lady helping us and taking our order and what seemed like one pizzaiolo in the back.

Kicking off the Great San Francisco Pizza Tour of 2021

San Francisco Pizza Tour of 2021
San Francisco Pizza Tour of 2021

A few years ago Gary and I took a trip to Lake Como, Italy. The Lake Como region is absolutely stunning and we got to see elegant palazzos, gorgeous villas, explore several of the small towns that span up and down the lake, experience lovely lakeside restaurants and take in stunning lake views almost everywhere we’d look. What we ate at these lakeside restaurants was pizza. We are pizza lovers by nature so getting to indulge in pizza almost everyday of our trip was one big dream come true. We can remember that every town had their own take and way of making pizza and the ingredients would be different. If you liked pepperoni for example, your pizza would have different pepperoni (small pepperoni slices, or larger slices, or small and spicy slices) depending on the little town you were at. This really intrigued us. I wish today we had documented more of those experiences (we have a lot of photos of the beautiful locations, but back then it wasn’t as acceptable to whip out your iPhone and take pictures of your meal for social media like it is today so, only a few of those photos exist) but hopefully one day soon (when the pandemic is gone) we can re-take that magical Lake Como vacation and document all the pizzas for you.

The one thing that hasn’t changed is our love and enjoyment of pizza. And, we have quite a few pizza places right here in our wonderful city by the bay San Francisco that we can share with you. In fact, you will find a monthly series on my blog “The Great San Francisco Pizza Tour of 2021” where I’ll be sharing our pizza adventures with you all as we search for the best pizza in San Francisco so sit back and enjoy and apologies in advance if these posts make you hungry.
