I wanted to share a an exceptional reference book for those of you collecting Black Americana, Cats, Mermaids and Niagara Falls salt and pepper shakers and it is titled “Salt and Pepper over 1001 Shakers” by Larry Carey and Sylvia Tompkins. Schiffer Publishing, Ltd. – Salt and Pepper Shakers (Books) 112 pages.

I came upon this particular book while at an antique mall and although I don’t usually look for books, the booth I was in had several antique and collectible books and they were displayed really well so I started to look over them and came upon this one and knew immediately I had to have it even though it was over 10 years old.

The book is compiled by Larry Carey who has over 6,000 shakers and Sylvia Tompkins who has over 7,000 shakers. Larry is the founder and former President of the Novelty Salt & Pepper Shakers Club and Sylvia served as President, Vice President, and newsletter editor of the club. Together, Larry and Sylvia compiled one of the best resources for shakers with a special focus on Black Memorabilia salt and pepper shakers (the first 90 pages is all Black Americana and Natives shakers) as even though I consider myself an expert in Black Americana kitchen items, this book has shakers I have not seen first hand and the book over all has a price guide and 1,500+ photos. A variety of sizes, colors, dates, country of manufacture and price guide included. You will see photos and learn information about shakers made by Miyao, Miyao Japan, Made In Japan, Pre-WWII era shakers, Enesco shakers, Van Tellingen shakers, Fitz and Floyd, Made in Germany shakers, Goebel salt and pepper shakers, American Bisque shakers, Aunt Jemima salt and pepper shakers, Uncle Mose salt and pepper shakers, Luzianne Coffee Salt and Pepper shakers, F&F Mold Dayton Ohio shakers, Ceramic Arts Studio rare salt and pepper shakers, Nodders, Napco salt and pepper shakers, National Potteries shakers and so much more! If you can get your hands on a copy do so as it is a MUST for any collector.

Made by the F & F Mold & Die Works Company in Dayton, Ohio back in the 1940s-1950s, Aunt Jemima Spice Racks are more desirable than ever.  Credit the positively changing economy or the many “new” Black Americana collectors, but Aunt Jemima kitchen collectibles are super “hot” right now and one item in particular is garnering attention – Aunt Jemima Spice Racks.

Aunt Jemima collectibles were offered as premiums for purchasing Quaker Oats products and were manufactured by the F&F Mold & Die Works Company in Dayton, Ohio; the items were made of a very hard plastic material. Many of the Quaker Oats Aunt Jemima products back in the 1940s and 1950s would have an advertisement on the box or carton that if you sent in the order form attaching a clipping from the box top to the company would then send you the item.

The Spice Jars were mini “Aunt Jemima” figures and came with Clove, Allspice, Ginger, Nutmeg, Paprika and Cinnamon and the spice was written across the front of her apron. The Spice Racks came in a couple different versions and a highly sought after one is the copper rack with a beautiful Mississippi River Boat scene. Other spice racks were red plastic and said “spice” and a red plastic 2tier rack display stand.

Condition is EVERYTHING when dealing with antiques and collectibles and lots of these rare Aunt Jemima spice jars and spice racks were used in kitchens throughout the 40s and 50s so finding them with paint wear and scratches, missing stoppers, and damaged is not uncommon. But, occasionally, a mint condition set or set in very good condition will become available so for all you collectors, keep your eyes open for these precious and rare collectibles as values are climbing everyday. The copper Aunt Jemima Spice Rack with Mississippi River Boat ranged between $1,500-$2000 and the Aunt Jemima spice jars have a current range of $45-$65 and sets of just the 6 spice jars are selling for $300-$450!!

This past weekend we were on our way to the city of Granbury the town where our beautiful Bichon Frise puppy dog is from to visit all the antique malls we have been hearing about. Granbury is about an hour or so drive and about half way there all of a sudden on the right I spot Benbrook Antique Mall and I had my husband make a sharp right into the parking lot. I had heard about Benbrook Antique Mall and it was on my list of “must visit” Antique Malls and today was the day. The mall looked HUGE from the parking lot and pretty full with all the cars parked out front and it was a Sunday afternoon. (Granbury will have to wait till next time).

Walking inside, the place really was huge….. I would easily compare it to the Montgomery Street Antique Mall in Fort Worth. There were indeed lots of shoppers and that is always something I like to see because when you go inside a new place and its empty you pretty much form an opinion right away after walking up and down a couple isles and the opinion is not too good. Benbrook Antique Mall was really well lit so you could see what merchandise were in booths and behind glass. Booths for the most part were very inviting and setup with a “decorator’s flair”.

Benbrook Antique Mall has a nice mix of antiques and collectibles and there is some furniture though not much, which for me is fine as I am mostly looking for collectibles and lots of malls lately in my area I gripe about that they are turning into furniture shops as that is pretty much what you find.

There is even a sweet looking tearoom called “Gena’s De Vine Tearoom” and it looked really darling but was closed. Also, there was a small spot with chairs and a TV so husband’s can sit while their wives shop!! I have not seen a “Men’s” lounge before in other antique malls.

We had a blast at Benbrook Antique Mall and I most certainly rank this place on my top ten list of Antique Malls in the Dallas/Fort Worth area!  Many of my readers know that I am a collector of Black Americana / Black Memorabilia and this was the very first antique mall that I have been inside that actually had a nice selection of quality Aunt Jemima and Mammy items ranging from vintage Black Americana tablecloths and tea towels to salt and pepper shakers, figurines, and wall plaques – I was IMPRESSED! Huge place, well lit, helpful and friendly staff, very reasonable prices and a large selection of glass, antiques, collectibles, vintage clothing, vintage linens, furniture, jewelry, Hummel Figurines, primitives, shabby chic items, romantic cottage, clocks, coins, radios, Kitchen collectibles, Kitschy Collectibles, pottery sports and western memorabilia and more!! If you are in North Texas you must make time to visit Benbrook Antique Mall.

We have been receiving many comments and requests from our blog readers lately requesting information about Aunt Jemima. Yes, Aunt Jemima and Black Americana have recently become a very “hot” collectible and prices are certainly on the rise. We hope you find some of this information about Aunt Jemima and which Aunt Jemima collectibles to collect helpful.

A bit of background information – Aunt Jemima was the commercial Mammy image we are familiar with today and dates to 1889 by a man named Chris L. Rutt; a business man from Missouri selling self-rising pancake mix and when he heard a song about “Aunt Jemima” from a vaudeville group of Baker and Farrell the idea of commercializing Aunt Jemima was born. 40+ women portrayed Aunt Jemima over the decades on the pancake mix. Nancy Green was one of these women and she traveled with the R.L. Davis Company who bought the original Aunt Jemima pancake mix business form Chris L. Rutt until her death in 1923. Nancy was hired to serve pancakes at shows and exhibits promoting the pancake mix and it is said that in 1893 at an exhibit in Chicago over 1 million pancakes were served! In the early 1920s Quaker Oats purchased the company and brand from R. L. Davis along with the Aunt Jemima name and image and has been selling the pancake mix ever since. Quaker also trademarked “Aunt Jemima” in 1937. Edith Wilson was another long-time Aunt Jemima that was hired during the 1950s and portrayed the image for some 20 years.

Many products were created in the Aunt Jemima image such as salt and pepper shakers, sugar and creamer sets and six-piece spice jars with rack to name a few and many of these were give-aways or freebies if you bought the pancake mix. Today, these items are extremely sought after and the prices are increasing everyday so keep yours eyes on the look out for:

We get questions from time to time on “What is Black Americana” to “What items are collectible” so we decided to write up this little guide to hopefully answer these questions as we feel there just might be some other folks out there with these questions too. We are always learning and seeking information as this collecting niche is vast and there is still so much to learn.

What Exactly is Black Americana?

Black Americana is also referred to as Black Memorabilia, Afro-Americana, and Black Face Collectibles and these are all terms that refer to collectibles having an African- American theme.

As far back as the 1700s Black Americana porcelain figurines and dolls were being manufactured in Germany, Japan, England, France, Austria, and the United States. The majority of Black Americana items were produced between the late 1800s and the 1950′s. Souvenirs were the biggest market and included novelty items, salt and pepper shakers and bisque children sitting on cotton bales. In the late 1950’s-1960’s these items began to disappear from the market and were no longer being mass-produced.

Undoubtedly, these items are often offensive, but they do represent a historical record of our countries’ past and we then remember how our country over-came those days of so long ago. Many collectors say that they seek out these items today to show their children how races were viewed and how times and things have changed.

Interest in collecting Black Americana has seen a huge spike in recent years. It seems folks just can’t get enough of these rare quirky collectibles. Celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey, Bill Cosby, Spike Lee, and Whoopi Goldberg are avid collectors. Because the demand for Black Americana is so high with little inventory in the market place, new and fist-time collectors are finding it difficult to purchase more than one item at a time. But, there are still some bargains out there to be had as collectors and dealers who have multiples of items will occasionally part with them.
You can find Black Americana collectibles at specific shows across the country that specialize in this with many dealers booths setup to showcase and sell their items. Many antique malls and shops sometimes have these items in stock too. There are also many online Internet antique malls and stores as well as eBay. There are some insane deals to be had right on eBay!

Reproductions & Fakes

No discussion on Black Americana collectibles would be complete without mentioning reproductions and fake items. Several of the cookie jars and salt and pepper shakers are being made out of the old molds today. It can be very difficult to tell the difference between the old and new especially when they bear a maker’s mark. Usually the new item is a tiny bit smaller. Best rule is to know your merchandise and know your dealer. The Internet is a great resource for researching reproductions and there are several good books in the market that not only discuss fakes but list values too.

We all recall the image of Aunt Jemima on pancake mix boxes, you know, the smiling face of a African American mammy type woman who wore a hair-kerchief and apron and appeared so friendly and made you feel so comfortable purchasing the product from her smiling trustable face.

The commercial Mammy image we are familiar with today began as far back as 1889 by a man named Chris L. The company’s’ that were selling the Aunt Jemima pancake mix had items created like pins, puzzles, dolls, salt and pepper shakers, and recipe books, sugar and creamer sets, six-piece spice jars with rack, and the mammy cookie jars. In 1949 a plastic syrup pitcher was available and was attached to the pancake box as a freebie to entice folks to purchase the product. Also, many of these products were available by filling out one of the coupon cards that came with your Aunt Jemima pancake mix purchase. There were even Aunt Jemima paper hats and Halloween masks that were advertising freebies.

Today, Aunt Jemima and Mammy Black Americana collectibles are becoming increasingly difficult to come by and these items from a by gone era are highly sought after by collectors.
