Pinup Girl Vintage Living

Crazy4Me Pinup Girl Vintage Flamingo Circle Skirt

Happy Memorial Day blog friends!! A lot of exciting things have been happening and I wanted to share it with you. As many of you know, I love the 1950s-1960s and but what you may not know is that I have a real affinity for clothing of the 1950s. The 50s lifestyle; the values of yester-year where family, a glamorous wife, a handsome husband, and a beautiful home that was stylishly decorated and hearty dinners were served every day of the week all while wearing a beautiful dress, and having hair and makeup all done up. Wearing beautiful pinup girl dresses that have just the right cut and style to enhance women’s curves beautifully.  That magnificent cat-eye winged eyeliner and vintage victory roll hairstyles.

I am embracing the fashions, and have been wearing my vintage style circle skirts, pinup dresses, wiggle dresses, cardigans, and lovely stockings and heels. At first I wasn’t quite sure how to incorporate my new pinup girl look into the office atmosphere as my curvy figure in a wiggle dress (think more Joan Harris from Mad Men) or a pencil skirt and conservative though form fitting blouse would be way too much, I have been able to wear some pretty circle skirts with a blouse or cardigan and also some dresses. It does take a little more time getting ready for work in the morning especially when adding the vintage makeup touches of a cat-eye and putting on stockings and heels but I have to tell you that it feels fantastic! I feel pretty and feminine and proud to go to work. My former style was a pair of pants with a causal work appropriate top or sweater, and though I always put on my face and did my hair, wearing 50s pinup style dresses and skirts with heels just makes you feel so pretty. I also put my hair in a simple up-do or when my curly hair cooperates, I can pin the front and sides up a little to form a mini victory roll look. I am not quite ready for pin curls and curlers yet but stay tuned! I have also received so many compliments from female co-workers that want to know where I am getting my clothes. I work from home on occasion and love cooking dinner for my husband and I get my self all dolled up in a pretty pinup dress with petticoat for additional flair (think Betty Draper from Mad Men) who was prim and proper, looked so pretty in her 50s dresses that nipped in at the wait and were so flirty with the petticoats underneath. The twirling these dresses make you want to do  – oh my!!

Pinup Girl Clothing

Weekends are my favorite time as I can wear my fun pinup girl or swing dresses that are really curve hugging and enhancing!! I add a vintage handbag, sometimes a vintage chiffon scarf and of course the eyes and hair are all done up. I love wearing this look to the antique fairs and shows and when out at the antique and collectible shops. I have so much fun, the dresses are really comfortable while enhancing all my curves and I receive so many compliments.  I’m loving my classic pinup girl look!  My husband is so sweet and supportive and tells me how pretty I am!!

Recap of the Spring 2015 Portland Antique Show

Vintage Levis

The Spring antique show in Portland was great fun. For the most part, parking, entry into the show, and vendors were great. There was however so much Easter stuff, some vintage, some not. The usual types of items I love to find at this show just weren’t there. Even my favorite vendors didn’t really have great stuff. Maybe the show is just more to my collecting style in July and October. I was really surprised that there were a couple vendors that simply refused to budge on their prices… they wouldn’t come down event a penny!! WOW! I just couldn’t bring myself to buy anything from their booth. I just don’t get it. Oh well, still I had a blast and ended up shipping home a big box of goodies!!

Here are a couple pics of some of the fun items and booths I saw. The ‘Boob Tube’ was a crowd pleaser. I was in a booth where the vendor said he made the boob tube and he takes it tall the shows he’s at and folks always go up to it to take a picture, he said he should start charging a $1 for each photo, ha!

Amazing Finds at the 2014 Petaluma Antique Fair

photo 5Today was the annual Spring antique fair in the wine country town of Petaluma. The event is all out doors and features around 180 dealer booths and over 8,000 shoppers!! The fair has something for everyone from estate jewelry, furniture, linens, art, kitchenware, vintage décor, tin toys, Mid-Century Modern, books and a variety of collectibles. The weather called for rain and it sprinkled a bit but all in all the weather was really great; partly sunny, breezy, mid 60s.

We arrived a little after 9:30am and the fair already had a steady flow of shoppers. This is one of my favorite fairs as the dealers usually are friendly, negotiable on their prices and they offer to package up your goodies too.

photo 7Below are some pictures of the fair and pictures of the treasures we found. I couldn’t believe when I came upon the antique Majolica oyster plate or the PY Ucagco bluebird wall plaques, the pretty little vintage Christmas headvase, the adorable little boy vintage egg timer, the vintage Bradley pink sea horse wall plaques and even the little Art Deco Golliwog perfume bottle… wow! I still can’t believe my good fortune to find all these treasures!! My husband too scored some mint condition vintage cameras from a collector that has over 500 vintage cameras in his personal collection. I am so thankful to have a husband that enjoys antique fairs and antiquing in general with me as it is a great way to spend time together and really enjoy each other’s company!!

Mid-Century Modern, Vintage and Turquoise at the Antique Mall

MCM2

It’s been at least a couple weeks since I stopped into one of my ‘regular’ local antique malls. It really is ‘hit or miss’. Larger furniture items, paintings and lamps seem to be what sellers are putting in their booths these days. I am also seeing more and more Mid-Century Modern appearing mixed in with vintage and retro collectibles (pics below). This mall always has traffic and I have come early, late, and in the middle of the day on weekdays and weekends and always a steady flow of traffic and people buying. The weekend of March 14-16 is the mall’s 25 yr. anniversary sale so I hope the dealers will stock up their booths with lots of goodies!! I can’t wait for Spring to arrive (not just because of better weather) but for all the outdoor antique shows and sales!!  Hope you are all doing great and surviving the horrible weather that has bombarded much of the country!!

Halloween at the Antique Mall

Went for a little stroll through the antique mall up the road. This mall usually has bigger items like large furniture, lighting, and paintings. Not many smaller type collectibles. It was nice to see that the mall is trying to incorporate some of the ‘seasonal’ type items and with Halloween just around the corner, I do think that adding a couple pumpkins and skulls here and there can make all the difference for a holiday effect.

A Poor Economy is A Great Time For Collectors!

images

I know this sounds heartless but, tough economic times are great for collector’s because while many folks are effected by a down turn in the economy and some are literally forced to sell-off their precious collectibles just to make ends meet, collectors are out buying up the rare and hard-to-find items, sometimes for pennies on the dollar!

I have seen more garage sales and parking lot sales this past year then ever before and these sales are going on 7 days a week instead of the typical Friday-Sunday as many folks are unemployed so they mize as well hold a garage sale during the week. In some areas folks are hauling their items down to empty parking lots on busy streets and standing out there selling their items.

I have also heard the stories of elderly and retired folks that were victims of Bernie Madoff and his ponzi scheme and have now been forced to sell-off antiques, jewelry and family heirlooms just to survive and because the economy is in such bad shape they are not able to sell their items at fair market value but rather at bargain prices. All this translates into “It’s a great time to be a collector”.

Here are some tips for bargain-hunting Garage & Estate sales.

•    The hunt often begins with taking a good look at the classified section of your local newspaper(s). You can pretty quickly scan the paper for the garage sale section and learn within minutes what is being sold and where. The Internet is also a great resource as many sales are listed on Craigslist and your local “4 sale” websites.
•    Try to get to the sale before the sale starts and ask if you can look around- most people don’t mind and this ensures you are getting “first pick” at items.
•    Remember to respect people’s stuff as the items were once owned and loved by them.
•    Items are generally “sold as is” so be sure that you are looking the item(s) over very carefully for flaws and damage.
•    If you are purchasing clothing, make sure the zippers zip and that all buttons and embellishments are intact.
•    Sometimes you can get a better deal if you select multiple items and ask “how much for All this” rather than negotiating on single items.
•    Negotiate – its practically expected.
•    If you happen to be at a sale where you are very interested in an item, painting, dinnerware set, etc…and the owner does not want to budge on the price, you can leave your contact information and ask that they call you after the sale ends if they haven’t sold the item and they may be more inclined to negotiate with you at the end of the sale.
•    If you have access to basements and attics go check it out as this is where many great items and deals can be found. I have heard many stories of incredible finds coming from these areas, be sure to go early though as the more people that look the less items will be left for you as the better stuff will get snatched up.
•    Bring a good amount of cash in all ranges as no one is going to accept checks or credit cards.
•    Be sure to put empty boxes, bags, and blankets in your vehicle so you can safely transport your items.

Check back, as I will be posting some articles on items I have bought and what they are valued at as well as what they sold for. It will be interesting, I promise!
