“Life isn’t always perfect but your outfit can be”

Having an hourglass figure is not always easy to dress because finding clothing that nips in your waist and compliments your curves is not usually something you can find at the local shopping mall.  When I discovered The Dolores Doll dress from Collectif Clothing it immediately became one of my go-to styles.

Dangerfield Clothing Review – 1950s Novelty Print Skirts

Yasmina Greco
Isn’t this the most adorable 1950s repro skirt you have ever seen? The pattern originated from John Wolf in the 50s where Poodle dogs and puppies were put onto boarder prints for skirts and aprons. My heart started to sing when I saw this darling Puppy in A Basket print skirt from Dangerfield Clothing.

Dangerfield Clothing is a popular alternative Australian fashion brand with two additional labels Revival and Princess Highway. This puppy in a basket skirt is from their Revival label. The skirt comes in black and a lovely olive green color. The boarder print features the cutest little golden puppy dog sitting in a basket. I immediately had to have both color-ways and didn’t hesitate ordering as these prints sell out quickly.

Lady Voluptuous Dress Review – Tikitastic Summer Florals

Yasmina Greco - Lady V London

Yasmina Greco – Lady V London – Lady Voluptuous Vintage Style Dresses

Floral dresses are my absolute favorite!! I had been searching for a dress that epitomizes Spring and Summer and this is the dress – it is by Lady Voluptuous and called the Estella in Summer Floral print.

What caught my eye about this dress is the variety of colorful Hibiscus flowers, tropical Plumeria flowers, lush green palm fronds and beautiful butterflies against a soft blue background. I immediately could see multiple ways of styling this dress with colorful petticoats, hair scarves and flowers in shades of pinks, blues, yellows, oranges and greens. Also, you could easily add Tiki flair to it with some tropical hair flowers and bamboo bracelets and purse. And, because there are so many pretty colors to pick from, adding a striking colored cardigan would also be a great way to style and accessorize this gorgeous dress.

For my first look I kept it toned down with a pop of color from my magenta hair scarf. I wanted the dress to be the statement. I kept the accessories minimal with only a pair of vintage floral earrings and a pair of bone colored pumps. For a pop of color is my bright pink petticoat.

For my second look that I am calling my Elegant Tiki look, I paired the dress with bright yellow and I think it really makes a statement. I added yellow shoes, yellow hair scarf and a hibiscus flower along with a bright yellow petticoat. I also added some bamboo bangles and my vintage handbag made from woven wicker that has embroidered yellow and orange tropical flowers. And look what landed in my purse… the cutest flamingo!!

Let’s talk about the dress’s 1950s silhouette now.  Being a girl that loves her full skirts and nipped in waists, I was not disappointed. The dress has a full 1950s circle skirt so adding a petticoat to show off the fullness is truly fabulous.  The cut of the bust line is a crossover so it shows curves off beautifully without showing too much. I was a little concerned about how the dress would fit my full bust and if the dress would be tight and therefore give the dreaded pancake look but Lady V London knows how to cut clothing for curvy gals so there was no need to worry. The fabric has some stretch to it as well. I mean look at me; this dress truly fits like a dream!! I am comfortable and can easily wear this dress to work and then out for dinner too. 97% cotton / 3% elastine. You will be cool all summer long in this fabric. Sizes go up to 30/32 in the Lady Voluptuous label so curvy dolls around the world can dress beautifully.

The Lady V London brand is a husband and wife team that founded the company back in 2011 in London. Clothing is all designed in-house + manufactured in the heart of London and supports British businesses and workers. Lady V London is high quality clothing at a reasonable price too. There are two labels to choose from: Lady Vintage up to size 22 and Lady Voluptuous up to size 32. Both have stunning dresses with the same high quality fabric and designs. The company ships all around the world and let me tell you how quickly items arrive; I am in California and items from London arrive in about a week. The staff too at Lady V London is incredibly friendly and helpful. If you have sizing questions or concerns they are ready to assist!! You can find the gorgeous dress I am wearing and so many more (new stunning designs are coming as well… I’ve got my eyes on 3 flamingo prints) so hurry and order before they sell out. You will be so happy you did!!

1950s Boarder Print Kitty Cat Skirt

Yasmina Greco in Dangerfield Clothing

I know so many of my blog followers can’t resist a cute novelty print and you all know by now I can’t either so I wanted to share the most adorable kitty cat boarder print I was lucky to get my hands on from Dangerfield Clothing. You might remember Dangerfield Clothing from an early post I did that featured the cutest Poodle boarder print skirt.

Dangerfield Clothing is an Australian clothing company and has a fabulous retro/vintage line ‘Revival’. They have brilliant vintage style 1950s novelty prints so if you love novelty prints you’ll want to keep an eye on this brand. Shipping from Australia to USA has been around 1 week so fast shipping they do; for reference I am in California and within a week have my items.

The skirt I am featuring today is Dangerfield’s ‘Pawsitive’ dress. Yes, it started out as a dress!! It was a sleeveless, fit and flare dress with a pleated skirt made of cotton- pictured here. I ordered my standard Australian size of 18 to fit my voluptuous upper half but when it arrived it was a no-go. I wasn’t surprised…. a bit saddened but not surprised. I find their tops, cardigans and dresses run incredibly small and most do not have any stretch so it was no surprise the top half of the dress would not fit over my curvaceous upper half.

This was my first dress I had converted into a skirt. Since the main reason I purchased the dress was because of the kitty cat boarder print, a skirt would be perfect. I took it to a seamstress and what an easy fix, problem solved, I now had the most fabulous skirt!! Turquoise is my favorite color and the skirt features balls of yarn and the bows on the kitties in the color turquoise so I paired the skirt with my Heart of Haute top and a turquoise blue Petticoat by Malco Modes. We shot these pics against a mid-century modern cabinet filled with cats…. if you look closely there are Holt Howard kitty cats and the blue Norcrest cat too, even a El Gato Gomez cat painting and sculpture in the pics. Keep an eye on Dangerfield Clothing for some more fabulous novelty prints.

Pinup Girls and Poodle Skirts

Yasmina Greco Pinup Poodle Skirt

                      Yasmina Greco Pinup Poodle Skirt

Pinup girls and Poodles are quintessential of the 1950s so I wanted to do a post for you all about the origins of the Poodle skirt and showcase one of my all time favorite Poodle skirts made by a brand you might not be familiar with – Dangerfield Clothing.

Rockabilly gals, Pinup dolls, and retro/vintage fashion enthusiasts can thank Juli Lynne Charlot for the Poodle skirt. Per Wikipedia –  Juli Lynne was a young woman who wanted to be in fashion but she had no money for the new styles. In 1947, at the age of 25, Charlot was invited to a holiday party in Los Angeles and wanted to create a dress especially for the event. Not having money at the time Charlot decided to make her own skirt for the Christmas party. Charlot stated in an United Press International article of February 25, 1953 that, “If I had known how to sew, or had the money to purchase better materials, I would have never made the circle skirt.”

Today, when we think of 1950s clothing, the image that most often pops into our mind is the poodle skirt. Most vintage collectors know Charlot as the designer of some of the very best and most clever circle skirts to come out of the 1950s. It was quite fashionable at the time for women to be accompanied by dogs on leashes so Charlot decided to make a dog-themed skirt. And thus the iconic poodle skirt was born. Charlot’s creations were more than clothing – they told a story – and became conversation starters. Read more about Charlot and her company on Wikipedia

In these pictures taken by my hubby Gary I am wearing my favorite Poodle skirt by Australian brand Dangerfield Clothing

The skirt is incredibly well constructed with a built-in petticoat hem and the white Poodles are adorable with red flowers and bows and they really pop against the fabric making them standout beautifully. This is such a great novelty print skirt!! I am wearing my Heart of Haute Lily top in red and added my vintage Poodle purse and red heels. This outfit is perfect for the Autumn and winter and not too heavy as all the fabrics breathe. Even my my fluff ball Bichon Frise puppy dog Luna decided to join in for some pictures!!

Review: Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print – The Full-Busted Pinup Girl’s Best Friend

Yasmina Greco - Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print

Yasmina Greco – Pinup Girl Clothing Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print

Bright, happy, elegant, effortless, and colorful are all words I think of when I where this dress the Pinup Couture Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print and I am so happy I snapped it up when it was restocked at Pinup Girl Clothing. The print is amazing, one of the best novelty prints I have ever seen. Reminds me of 1950s Florida and I love that the oranges range in colors of yellow to bright orange and go from small to bigger on the hanging branches.

In these pictures that my wonderful hubby who does amazing things with vintage cameras over at Upcycled Classics snapped of me, I have my Pinup Couture Wicker Baguette Purse in lime green and added a simple yellow cardigan. I felt glamorous and chic, like I was on the Riviera. We snapped some pics on the front porch with fluffy puppy Luna then headed to a lovely outdoor antique and collectible show. I was comfortable and relaxed and received so many compliments.

The Jenny dress is one of my wardrobe staples and I don’t have nearly enough!! When you are a full-busted gal like myself it is very hard to find dresses that fit, have style, and have such great novelty prints and that is why the Jenny is a staple for me. I always feel put together and effortless. The dress is styled after the 1960s sundresses. The first thing you notice when you step into the dress is that the bodice is lined, boned, and fused. The lovely orange colored straps are adjustable so you can show as much or as little of your curves as you are comfortable with. Because of the adjustable straps and boning, the dress has incredible structure and will flatter a range of bust sizes, even those of us blessed with full-bust lines can comfortably wear this gorgeous dress and feel very put together and chic. The skirt on the Pinup Couture Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print is much like the Jenny skirts, a very full circle skirt and the material is a luxurious sateen that holds pleats and shape incredibly and this version even has pockets!! Zips nicely up the back and nips in your waist. Also, this one comes with a matching orange belt and that adds just the right amount of flair. Be prepared for lots of compliments!!

I am wearing the Jenny Dress in Orange Border Print in a 2XL (all my Jenny dresses are 2XL) and this size accommodates my full bust, yes, it is very roomy in the waist as I take XL in Jenny skirts but I love having the option of adding a belt to take in some of the excess fabric if I prefer, depending on how much waist definition I want that day.
